Technical checks within a calculation

Which calculations are associated with technical checks within a calculation? Read what is assessed, what data is required and how to prepare the assignment.

A structural calculation usually consists of several checks. Which checks are required depends on the structure, material, use and the relevant loads. These topics are therefore not automatically ten separate assignments.

Strength

A strength check examines whether parts and connections have sufficient resistance to the calculated forces. Tension, compression, bending and shear force can occur separately or in combination.

Prepare: Make loads, material data and cross-sections available.

Stability

The construction must remain stable as a whole and per part. This concerns, for example, horizontal force transfer, buckling of columns and lateral deflection of beams.

Prepare: Indicate connections, discs, supports and lateral attachments.

Deflection and deformation

This check assesses movements under load and their consequences for use and finish. Differences in deformation can also affect facades and partition walls.

Prepare: Indicate spans, finishes and sensitive connections.

Vibrations

A floor, stairs or platform may respond to walking, machines or other repetitive stimuli. The assessment looks at the dynamic properties and intended use.

Prepare: Provide data on the source, frequencies or speeds and usage function.

Wind load

Wind can cause pressure, suction and horizontal forces. Building shape, height, location and openings influence the principles.

Prepare: Indicate location, terrain, building dimensions and open or closed sides.

Snow load

Snow places a strain on the roof and can accumulate locally. Roof shape, height differences and adjacent buildings can have an influence.

Prepare: Share roof slopes, curbs, height differences and roof plans.

Structural fire resistance

In the event of fire, material properties change and the load-bearing capacity may decrease. The assessment examines the load-bearing function during the required situation and any protective measures.

Prepare: Provide the established fire exit points and details of cladding or protection.

Fatigue

Frequently repeated load changes can cause damage in the long term. This applies, for example, to crane tracks, bridges and certain machine constructions.

Prepare: Describe load changes, cycle numbers and expected service life.

Earthquake resistance

An earthquake assessment examines the response to ground movements and the coherence of the supporting system. Location, building design and material behavior are important starting points.

Prepare: Collect location data, construction drawings and information about existing connections.

Construction phases and assembly

A partially built structure works differently than the completed state. Support points, connections or paved floors may still be missing during installation.

Prepare: Record the installation sequence, temporary support points and moments of loading.

Data for the initial assessment

  • Intended use and desired lifespan
  • Construction scheme and materials
  • Relevant loads and combinations
  • Requirements for deformation, fire and execution

From request to defined assignment

  1. Capture situation. Describe the location, existing condition and intended change.
  2. Review data. Discuss which documents are useful and what additional research is needed.
  3. Agree on scope. Record which checks, drawings and implementation phases are being developed.
  4. Fine-tune design. Please include changes in dimensions, material or use in the documents.

What determines the price?

The scope of the calculations, available data, required details and coordination determine the assignment. There is no single prize for this category that covers all situations. View the known starting prices and quote requests.

Frequently asked questions

Is a static calculation the same as a strength calculation?

The terms are sometimes used broadly. Determining forces and reactions and testing load-bearing capacity are related steps, but the exact assignment must be described.

Should every home be calculated for fatigue?

Not every audit topic is relevant to every project. The structural engineer determines which effects are associated with the usage situation and construction.

Is structural fire resistance complete fire safety advice?

No. The load-bearing function in the event of fire is one part. Other topics, such as escape and fire compartmentalization, require their own coordination.
