Frequently asked questions

Answers to your construction questions.

From the first drawings to costs, delivery and changes during implementation.

Preparation

When should I involve a structural engineer?

Involve the structural engineer as soon as a constructive change is part of your plan. In this way, the architectural design can be tailored accordingly.

Do I always need archival drawings?

Archives are a useful starting point. What information is ultimately needed is assessed for the project.

Can I only send photos?

You can use photos to explain your question. The structural engineer determines what additional information is required.

What if the existing drawings are incorrect?

Please report the differences. Sometimes a recording or investigation is necessary to determine the actual situation.

Can I combine different procedures?

Yes, discuss the entire plan so that related components in the assignment can be identified.

Calculation and drawing

What does the report say?

The principles, assessed components and constructive substantiation of the agreed assignment.

Is drawing work included?

The drawings and details you receive will be recorded in the quotation.

Does the architect also make the calculation?

Architecture and construction are different disciplines. Record who designs and assesses which parts.

What is a supplier detail?

An elaboration of, for example, steel or prefab parts for production or assembly. This must be consistent with the structural design.

Can I choose a beam size myself?

A suitable beam size follows from the project design and calculation, including support and connections.

Price and planning

Are the amounts shown fixed project prices?

They are starting prices or indications. The final order and price are included in your quotation.

What influences the price?

This includes the size, available data, drawings, research and required coordination.

What does urgency mean for my project?

Please indicate the desired date. The feasibility, information needs and any surcharge are agreed in advance.

When does the delivery time start?

Agree on what moment counts as the start, for example after approval and receipt of sufficient data.

How do I compare quotes?

Compare the same parts, VAT treatment, drawings, revisions and any individual items.

Implementation and changes

Can the contractor deviate from a drawing?

Have a proposed constructive deviation agreed in advance with the designer involved.

Is a temporary propping plan automatically included in the calculation?

Not automatically. Record the temporary support and responsible implementation separately.

When can I order steel?

When the necessary design and production data are matched and the correct revision is used.

What do I do with a question from the municipality?

Share the question with the agreed contact person and have it determined what addition is needed.

Which documents do I keep after delivery?

Save the final drawings, calculations, revisions and relevant implementation and product data.

Questions per type of renovation

Remove load-bearing wall

Can I tell from the thickness whether my wall is load-bearing?

Wall thickness is at most an indication. The load-bearing direction of floors, upper building components, previous renovations and the actual support must be considered together. Collect drawings from multiple floors and determine what additional information is needed. Do not start removal based on a knock test or a comparison with another home.

Is the foundation also examined for a load-bearing wall?

That depends on the agreed assignment and the consequences of the breakthrough. A beam can concentrate forces on smaller support points. The underlying construction and foundation may therefore be relevant. Ask explicitly which supports, columns and existing parts are included, so that it is clear where the assessment ends.

What is included in the starting price for a load-bearing wall calculation?

De gepubliceerde vanafprijs is €419. The quotation must state which parts and drawings can be developed for this in your situation. Demolition, steel, assembly, finishing and temporary support are not automatically part of the calculation order. The VAT status of the published starting price is yet to be confirmed.

Can the beam disappear completely into the ceiling?

That is a design question related to floor structure, available height, loads and connections. Please indicate the desired finish when requesting. Have possible solutions agreed upon by the designer and structural engineer before the ceiling height, installations and steel order are finalized.

New extension

Are the rear facade breakthrough and extension one calculation?

They can be part of one constructive assignment, but that must be agreed. The opening in the existing facade, the new roof and the foundation influence each other. Therefore, describe the complete plan and ask which existing and new parts are included in the quotation.

Can an extension be built without piles?

The choice of foundation is based on building loads, soil and allowable deformations. The situation of the neighbors or a general construction method is not sufficient justification for your own extension. Share available CPTs and foundation data and discuss what additional information is required for the choice.

What must the supplier of my extension provide?

Ask about the structure, weights, support points, connections and the limits of his own calculations. The structural engineer must know which components the supplier is developing and who assesses the connection to the existing home. Use the same design version in both assignments.

Can I add a floor to my extension later?

Discuss that wish before the first draft. A future floor may change the principles for foundation, walls, columns and stability. Make it clear whether and with what principles the later expansion has been included. An extra floor is not automatically possible because the extension is new.

Additional rooftop storey

Is a light roof structure always possible?

A low net weight can be beneficial, but is not an automatic confirmation. Use load, wind, connections, stability and the existing carrying route are also relevant. The structural engineer must determine what information about the home and foundation is required to assess the design.

Which drawings are needed for a roof structure?

Collect the new design and available drawings of the existing foundation, floors, load-bearing walls and roof. Add information about previous breakthroughs and renovations. Indicate which data is missing. The structural engineer then determines whether recording or additional research is necessary.

Should the new stairs also be included?

A new stair opening can change the floor and surrounding structure. Therefore, share the stair location, desired opening and floor heights at the same time as the design of the structure. Determine who calculates the opening and who coordinates the dimensions with the stair supplier.

What if the existing home needs to be reinforced?

Ask which reinforcements are being developed within the assignment and what additional information is required for this. Discuss the consequences for layout, finishing, implementation and budget. Include the chosen solution in the current drawings before ordering the structure or required parts.

Foundations

Is a CPT the same as foundation advice?

No. A CPT is a measurement of the properties of the subsurface. An advice connects soil data with the design question and building loads. Ask what studies are available and whether they are sufficiently appropriate for the location and the proposed structure.

Can an existing foundation be reused?

This requires an assessment of the existing foundation, its condition and the new load. Available drawings, pile data, soil surveys and previous reports can help. The mere fact that a building has been there for a long time does not provide an answer to a new structural change.

Is reinforcement indicated in the foundation calculation?

Which reinforcement drawings or details you receive depends on the design and the assignment. Record which foundation components are calculated and how the calculation is delivered. Coordinate supplier information and any implementation questions with the party that designs the relevant parts.

Why are the adjacent buildings relevant?

Construction, excavation or changes in the subsurface can affect adjacent areas. The data and research required depends on the situation. Indicate the distance to other buildings and share known information about existing foundations, basements and damage.

Steel beam

Can I choose a steel beam based on the span alone?

No. Loads, support, lateral support, deformation and connections are also relevant. Two openings of the same width may therefore require different solutions. Do not use a general beam table as an ordering specification for an unknown existing structure.

Is another steel profile with the same height interchangeable?

Not automatically. Profile shape, dimensions, steel type and connections influence the behavior. Have a proposed alternative assessed before ordering. Also ask whether connection details, plates and required protection need to be adjusted.

Dormer

Does the dormer supplier's calculation cover my entire roof?

That depends on the supplier's assignment. His calculation can only relate to the delivered product. Record who assesses the existing roof construction, interrupted parts and connections. This way you prevent the transition between product and building from falling outside both assignments.

Does the location of the dormer window make a difference?

Yes, the opening can interrupt or load other roof components depending on its position. Therefore, share a drawn position, dimensions and a cross-section of the existing roof. Have changes to the location or width communicated to the designer involved.

Roof terrace

Can every flat roof become a roof terrace?

An accessible roof has a different use and often a different structure. People, flooring, fencing and planters must be taken along. The existing roof construction and connections are assessed for that new situation; a waterproof roof is not automatically suitable as a terrace.

Should planters be listed separately?

Yes, localized heavy components may act differently on the roof than an evenly distributed load. Provide position, dimensions and relevant weights, including contents under the intended conditions. Reconcile subsequent format changes.

Solar PV panels

What information is required for solar panels on a flat roof?

In addition to roof and construction drawings, the installation plan, ballast distribution and weights of panels and mounting system are relevant. Have the installer supply the proposed setup. Also report existing installations and planned changes to the roof structure.

Is the weight of the solar panels alone sufficient?

No. Fastening, ballast, distribution and the influence of wind are also relevant. The structural engineer must be able to assess the existing building construction for the proposed situation. A change to the mounting system or ballast plan may require new coordination.

Stair opening

Is a stairwell the same on every floor?

No. A wooden beam layer, solid concrete floor and prefab floor system have different properties and carrying routes. The location of the opening is also relevant. Therefore, collect the floor structure and available system data before developing the solution.

Who determines the size of the stair opening?

The size must match the stairs, free height, floor thickness and structural support. Have the designer, staircase supplier and structural engineer use the same data. Only order the stairs based on the agreed and checked dimensions.

House and new construction

What does a structural calculation for a new home include?

A related assignment can concern the foundation, floors, walls, columns, beams and roof. The precise parts and drawings must be agreed. Also ask which supplier calculations are required and who monitors mutual coordination.

When do I involve the structural engineer in new construction?

Preferably during the development of the main concept. Large openings, free spans and installation space can affect the supporting structure. Early coordination makes it clear which choices require further research or elaboration before the design becomes final.

Extension of an existing room

Which existing parts are relevant for an extension?

That depends on the connection, but the existing rear facade, floors and foundation are often relevant. Have the plan described as a whole and mention previous renovations. Ask in the quotation which existing parts will be included.

Does the roof of the extension have to be calculated separately?

The roof construction is part of the complete design and can be developed within the same assignment. Please provide details of the structure, spans and any solar panels or green roof. Determine the delivery boundaries between structural engineer and supplier.

Balcony

Is attachment to the existing facade always possible?

This must be assessed for the existing structure. Facade material, underlying supporting structure and the method of load transfer are relevant. A balcony can have different support principles; have the complete solution including substructure and connections developed.

Is the balustrade part of the balcony assessment?

This must be recorded in the assignment. The balustrade and its mountings have their own principles and must fit in with the balcony design. Ask who provides the product data and who assesses the connections.

Bay extension

Why does a small bay window require constructive attention?

Even a small extension can interrupt an existing facade and add new forces to the subsurface. Foundation, facade support and roof belong to the same design question. Therefore, please provide more than just the outside dimensions of the bay window.

Can the frame supplier solve all constructive questions?

The supplier can develop its own product, but the assessment of the building construction must be demarcated separately. Ask who will take into account the overhead load and the connection to existing buildings.

Canopy

What information is required for a roof?

Provide dimensions, free spans, column positions, roof structure and the desired connection to the home. The subsurface and any future additions are also relevant. The open or closed sides influence the wind rating.

Can the canopy be attached to my facade?

That depends on the structural design and the existing facade and supporting structure. Have it assessed where forces can be absorbed. Random attachment to just the facade finish is not a detailed connection detail.

Carport

Can I get fewer columns under my carport?

A wider free passage may require different beams, connections or a different stability principle. Discuss the desired clearance before design. Compare solutions including foundation, material, production and installation.

Should future solar panels be included?

Pass on your wish immediately, even if the panels do not arrive until later. Ask what principles are recorded and what data will be needed later. A global wish for the future is not a detailed laying and ballast plan.

Garage

Why is a wide garage door constructively relevant?

The opening takes away a large part of the facade. The structure above and next to the opening must be able to absorb and dissipate the associated forces. The roof structure and stability design partly determine the solution.

Does storage above the garage make a difference?

Yes, the use and planned storage influence the principles for a first floor and the substructure. Please specify the intended use and have changes compared to the original design assessed.

Shed

What information determines the calculation of a shed?

In addition to dimensions and construction method, use, roof structure, support and subsurface are relevant. Machines, a storage attic or heavy installations must be mentioned separately. This way, the assignment is in line with real use.

Has the construction of a kit already been completely calculated?

Check which parts the supplier develops and for what circumstances. Foundations, anchoring or specific adjustments may fall outside the standard package. Record who assesses missing parts.

Flat roof

When do I have my existing flat roof assessed?

In the event of a planned change in weight, use or construction, a targeted assessment is useful. Consider extra insulation, installations, solar panels, a green roof or an opening. Describe the existing and desired structure and indicate known deformations.

Why do drainage and construction belong to the same consultation?

Water that accumulates on a roof can cause additional strain. Drainage and any emergency facilities must therefore be coordinated with the architectural and structural design. The suitable solution depends on the complete roof structure and geometry.

Remove chimney

Can only the bottom part of a chimney be removed?

If parent parts remain in place, it must be clear how they are supported. Adjacent floors and roof parts can also be important. Describe per floor what will disappear and what will be retained and have the relevant construction assessed.

Which photos help with a chimney application?

Send overview images of the floors involved and accessible connections, together with drawings or a section. Make it clear which parts are hidden. The structural engineer determines whether additional research is necessary before a solution can be developed.

Timber floor joists

Are beam sizes sufficient to assess a wooden floor?

No. Span, distance between beams, material data, condition, supports and floor structure are also relevant. The assessment must also be in line with the intended use and any new openings or loads.

Why is deflection considered for a wooden floor?

In addition to strength, deformation and vibration behavior can be important for use and finishing. A heavier or stiffer floor structure can have other consequences than just extra weight. Discuss the entire structure with the designers involved.

Lintel

Is a lintel the same as a steel beam?

A lintel is a part that absorbs loads above an opening and can be made of different materials. A steel beam can fulfill that function. Which material and detail are suitable depends on the load, support and available space.

Can an existing lintel remain with a wider opening?

That needs to be reassessed. The free span, supports and overlying loads can change. Share the existing information and the new dimensions before the opening is adjusted.

Steel truss

Which parts are included in a truss calculation?

This concerns the agreed bars or profiles, nodes, support and coherence with the stability structure. Ask which connections and foundation reactions are being developed and who will provide supplier and assembly information.

Can an existing truss support additional installations?

That depends on the truss, the position of the new load and the existing design principles. Provide device weights, suspension points and any dynamic effects. Also have the connecting construction defined within the required assessment.

Roof ridge raising

What changes structurally with a ridge increase?

The roof geometry and possibly the supporting structure change. New parts and connections must connect to the existing home. Share cross-sections, desired heights and information about the existing roof, floors and support.

Is a prefab ridge increase possible without an assessment of the home?

The supplier can develop the delivered structure, but this does not automatically assess the connection to the existing home. Determine the division of tasks and ask which existing components require additional investigation.

Floor and floor reinforcement

When is a floor change constructively relevant?

For example, with a new opening, different support, extra weight or changed use. The existing floor structure and bearing direction are important data. Provide the complete desired situation, including installations and new walls.

Can I move a recess if that suits me better?

A different position can touch other structural parts or change the effect of force. Have the proposed relocation assessed and incorporated into the correct documents before implementation. This also applies to changes that appear minor on the map.

Additional storey above an extension

Is an existing extension prepared for a floor?

This is not only evident from age or appearance. Find the original design and check which principles have been laid down for the foundation and superstructure. The structural engineer assesses what information is required for the new situation.

What if the old calculation is missing?

Collect the available construction drawings, details of the contractor and photos. State what remains unknown and ask what admission or investigations are necessary. An absent report cannot be replaced by an assumption that a comparable extension is the same.

Sliding doors and facade breakthrough

Are sliding doors load-bearing?

The function and performance of the specific product follow from the supplier data. Do not assume that a new facade will automatically accommodate the building above. Coordinate the facade shelter and the frame design.

Why should the facade and structure be measured together?

The required free space, beam height, deformation and connection details can influence the frame dimensions. Use the same agreed dimensions and revision for structural engineer, supplier and executor before production starts.

Multiple interventions in one project

Is one assignment useful for multiple constructive interventions?

A coherent assignment helps to assess shared carrying routes and connections. Make an overview of all interventions and record which parts are being developed. The exact division of tasks remains important when different suppliers provide their own calculations.

How do I keep track of changes from different parties?

Work with one document list and appoint a contact person for coordination. Record which drawings, parts and suppliers are affected for each change. Share decisions in a timely manner with everyone who produces or implements based on that data.

Questions about all types of calculations

Breakthroughs and existing homes

Is just calculating the new bar sufficient?

Not automatically. Supports, connections, stability and the structure under the beam can also be part of the assessment.

Can a photo prove that a wall is not load-bearing?

A photo alone often does not provide sufficient information about floor spans and hidden connections. Combine photos with drawings and, if necessary, a recording.

Is temporary support part of the assignment?

Record that explicitly. The design of the final situation does not automatically include all implementation phases.

Extensions and outbuildings

Does a small outbuilding also need constructive attention?

Yes. Dimensions are only one factor; Wind, material, open sides, connections and subsurface also play a role.

Can an extension have the same foundation as the house?

This does not only follow from the type of home. Soil, load, existing foundation and possible settlement differences must be assessed.

What if the supplier already has a calculation?

Check which dimensions, location, loads and connections apply and which parts are not included in the scope of delivery.

Roofs and roof extensions

Is a roof strong enough if it previously had solar panels on it?

That does not prove that a new layout or extra ballast is suitable. Have the new situation assessed with the current data.

What weight counts for a green roof?

Use the relevant data for the complete structure, including the condition with absorbed water. The dry product weight alone is insufficient as a starting point.

Why is the foundation also considered when building a roof?

The extra load does not remain on the roof. It is drained to the foundation and soil via underlying components.

Floors, stairs and balconies

Why is the weight per square meter not always enough?

A heavy load on small legs or a limited footplate can be locally decisive. Also provide dimensions and contact points.

Can I just make a recess in a concrete floor?

First determine which floor system and which reinforcement or prestressing are present. The location and size of the opening require a project-specific assessment.

Is deflection the same as failure?

No. Deflection describes deformation; a strength check examines the load-bearing capacity. Both can be relevant to the design.

Foundations and earth retaining structures

Is only a CPT a foundation calculation?

No. A sounding test provides information about the soil. The foundation design combines these data with loads, construction and implementation.

Can the neighbors' foundation serve as an example?

It can provide background information, but does not replace an assessment of your own location, loads and existing conditions.

Why does groundwater count in a basement?

Water pressure can place loads on walls and floors and lead to upward forces. The design must assume appropriate water levels.

Complete buildings and transformations

Can one calculation be used for multiple home types?

Only to the extent that the principles and constructive implementation correspond. Deviations must be assessed in a recognizable manner.

Is a transformation just a new layout?

Not always. New floor packages, facades, installations and openings can also change the structure.

When do I involve the structural engineer in the design?

Preferably as soon as the main layout and major wishes are known. The supporting structure, spans and architecture can then be coordinated together.

Calculations per construction material

Can a wooden beam be replaced one-on-one by steel?

Not based on the outside size alone. Stiffness, load-bearing capacity, weight, support and connections change accordingly.

What is CLT?

CLT is cross-glued solid wood, used in walls and floors, among other things. The structure and product specifications are necessary for the constructive assessment.

Is the connection part of the material choice?

Yes. A suitable supporting part must also be able to transfer its forces via feasible connections.

View all topics in this category

Connections and fixings

Is a product table enough to choose an anchor?

A table applies under certain conditions. The substrate, geometry, loads and mounting must correspond to this.

Who develops the connection?

The structural engineer or a specialized supplier can do this. Determine who calculates the connection and who monitors the coherence with the main design.

Can a connection to construction be changed?

Have changes assessed in advance. Other holes, weld details or anchors may change the operation of the connection.

Technical checks within a calculation

Is a static calculation the same as a strength calculation?

The terms are sometimes used broadly. Determining forces and reactions and testing load-bearing capacity are related steps, but the exact assignment must be described.

Should every home be calculated for fatigue?

Not every audit topic is relevant to every project. The structural engineer determines which effects are associated with the usage situation and construction.

Is structural fire resistance complete fire safety advice?

No. The load-bearing function in the event of fire is one part. Other topics, such as escape and fire compartmentalization, require their own coordination.

Temporary, industrial and civil constructions

Are these all services that I can order directly?

These are areas of knowledge. First discuss the question and required specialization; the executing party and content of any assignment are determined in advance.

Can a standard scaffolding drawing always be used?

Only when the actual structure and conditions fall within the application conditions. Deviations must be assessed.

Is transport part of the final structural calculation?

Not automatically. Lifting, transport and assembly must be explicitly included in the scope or in a separately coordinated design.

Constructions and construction preparation

Structural systems: from load-bearing walls to trusses and shells

Is a skeleton always made of steel?

No. For example, a skeleton can be made of steel, concrete, wood or a combination.

What is the difference between hybrid and collaborative?

Hybrid refers to a combination of materials. Constructive cooperation means that the joint supporting effect has been explicitly designed.

Are prefab structures always stronger?

No. Prefab describes where parts are made. The performance results from design, material, connections and execution.

Casting concrete pad footings: preparation and steps

How large should my pad footing be?

This results from loads, subsurface, stability and the concrete design. There is no universal base size for every upright.

How much concrete do I need?

For a rectangular base, the geometric volume is length × width × height, all dimensions in meters. Only use the established design dimensions and coordinate the order quantity with the executor.

Can I always tax after 28 days?

That period is not an automatic release for every project. The required strength, conditions and design determine when and how loads may be applied.

Beam types and load-bearing capacity: steel, timber and concrete

Does an HEB always carry more than an IPE?

A separate profile name is insufficient for that conclusion. The exact dimensions, material, load direction, support and span must be compared.

Is a wooden beam of the same size equally strong?

Not automatically. Strength class, condition, load duration and moisture conditions may vary.

Can an online bar table replace my calculation?

Only if all application conditions can be demonstrably agreed can a table within a design be useful. It does not automatically cover connections, stability and underlying structures.

Columns and posts: types and load-bearing capacity

Can a thicker column always do the same job?

Not without assessment. Connections, stiffness, foundation load and mounting can also change.

How many tons does a steel column carry?

This requires exact profile data, length, support conditions and forces. The material name alone does not provide a useful number.

Is a pad footing always needed?

The load can also be transferred to another designed foundation or supporting part. That follows from the system.

Pad footing, pile or strip foundation: what is the difference?

Does the Dutch term “fundering op staal” mean there is steel underneath?

No. The term describes direct foundation on the ground without pile system.

Can a footing be supported by piles?

Yes. A footing can distribute the load from a column to one or more piles.

Is a thicker floor a foundation slab?

Only when the slab is designed as a foundation part. Extra thickness alone does not substantiate this.

Pouring concrete: checks before, during and after pouring

Can I add extra water?

Do not change the delivered concrete composition on your own initiative. Coordinate processability with supplier and executor.

When can the formwork be removed?

That depends on the part, the achieved strength and the implementation agreements. Stripping and fully loading are different decisions.

Why take photos before the pour?

Then reinforcement, anchors and collapsed parts are still visible. Photos support the file but do not replace substantive checks.

Permit for building and renovation: a clear step-by-step plan

Is permit-free also regulation-free?

No. The absence of a permit requirement does not mean that all substantive rules expire. Check the requirements for your specific activity.

Is removing a load-bearing wall always without a permit?

Do not use a general assumption for this. Check the activity and situation via the Environment Desk and discuss any doubts with the municipality.

Does the structural calculation regulate my permit?

No. The calculation is a document within the preparation or procedure. Arrange separately who will take care of the application and other documents.

construction all risks insurance (CAR) during construction: what should you check in advance?

Does a CAR policy prove that everything is covered?

No. The insured activities, categories, amounts, duration and exclusions are decisive.

Who takes out the insurance?

This is agreed between the parties involved and coordinated with the advisor. Record who is the policyholder and who is co-insured.

Is CAR the same as liability?

No. Discuss the functions and connections of the relevant policies with the advisor; do not assume complete overlap.

What are your construction plans?
