Foundations and earth retaining structures

Which calculations are associated with foundations and earth-retaining structures? Read what is assessed, what data is required and how to prepare the assignment.

The foundation connects the structure to the ground. Structural calculations and geotechnical investigations must therefore be based on the same loads, heights and soil data. Groundwater and the environment also play a role in soil retaining.

Shallow foundation

Strips, foundations or a foundation slab transfer loads to the soil without a pile system. Both the structural part and the load-bearing capacity and deformation of the subsurface are assessed.

Prepare: Provide soil data, foundation level and loads.

Detailed explanation and request: shallow foundation

Pile foundation

Piles transfer the load to the ground via shaft and/or pile tip. The chosen pile solution must fit the location and superstructure geotechnically and structurally.

Prepare: Share CPTs, pile type, loads and limitations for implementation.

Detailed explanation and request: Pile foundation

Foundation beams and pile heads

Foundation beams and foundations distribute the load to piles or other support points. Reinforcement, connections and the actual support point positions must match each other.

Prepare: Provide the pile plan, pile reactions and any measured deviations.

Detailed explanation and request: Foundation beams and pile heads

Foundation for an extension

The foundation of the extension must match the new load and the connection with the existing home. Different settlement behavior is an important point of attention.

Prepare: Collect data from the existing foundation and the new design.

Detailed explanation and request: Foundation for an extension

Existing foundation with additional load

In case of topping or heavier use, the reserve of the existing foundation is examined. Missing data may lead to additional research.

Prepare: Share previous calculations, foundation data and settlement information.

Detailed explanation and request: Existing foundation with additional load

Foundation repair and reinforcement

Restoration first requires insight into the cause and condition of the existing foundation. The new parts and the transfer of load during the recovery are coordinated.

Prepare: Collect research reports, damage images and measurement data.

Sub-foundation

When working under existing foundations, support must be ensured during each phase. The sequence and transfer to new foundation parts are part of the design.

Prepare: Part of excavation depth, existing foundation and construction space.

Basement walls and basement floors

A basement experiences ground and possibly water pressure in addition to loads from the building. The structural engineer coordinates walls, floor, connections and resistance to floating.

Prepare: Provide groundwater levels, soil data and the desired basement depth.

Retaining walls

A retaining wall retains soil and must therefore have sufficient load-bearing capacity and stability. Additional loads behind the wall and drainage influence the principles.

Prepare: Indicate ground elevations, site load, soil type and water conditions.

Sheet piles and construction pit support

An excavation support design assesses the retaining structure, any struts or anchors and effects on the surroundings. The design must account for excavation stages and water levels.

Prepare: Provide ground investigation records, excavation dimensions, drawings of the surroundings and the proposed construction stages.

Data for the initial assessment

  • Soil research and groundwater data
  • loads from the superstructure
  • Existing foundation plan
  • Situation and buildings around the work

From request to defined assignment

  1. Capture situation. Describe the location, existing condition and intended change.
  2. Review data. Discuss which documents are useful and what additional research is needed.
  3. Agree on scope. Record which checks, drawings and implementation phases are being developed.
  4. Fine-tune design. Please include changes in dimensions, material or use in the documents.

What determines the price?

The scope of the calculations, available data, required details and coordination determine the assignment. There is no single prize for this category that covers all situations. View the known starting prices and quote requests.

Frequently asked questions

Is only a CPT a foundation calculation?

No. A sounding test provides information about the soil. The foundation design combines these data with loads, construction and implementation.

Can the neighbors' foundation serve as an example?

It can provide background information, but does not replace an assessment of your own location, loads and existing conditions.

Why does groundwater count in a basement?

Water pressure can place loads on walls and floors and lead to upward forces. The design must assume appropriate water levels.
