Architect, draftsman or structural engineer?

Who does what in your construction project?

Architectural drawings on a computer screen

What does it mean?

The architect or architectural designer develops the spatial and architectural design. An architectural draftsman records the design and develops it at the agreed level. The structural engineer designs and substantiates the supporting structure.

These roles may lie with different parties. Record who is responsible for coordination and who handles questions from contractor, supplier or municipality. The title of architect is protected; you can check a registration in the Register of Architects.

What is recorded?

  • Spatial design and layout
  • Architectural development and drawings
  • Structural design and calculations
  • Coordination between all documents

Make the assignment concrete

Ask what documents you are receiving, what purpose they are for and what level of detail is provided. Agree on how additions and design changes will be processed and who will coordinate with other parties.

Work with the correct revision

Check that calculations and drawings refer to the same situation. Have important changes assessed first and provide all parties involved with the current documents.
