Detailed drawings and working drawings

From design to clearly detailed connections.

Architectural drawings on a computer screen

What does it mean?

A detail drawing shows how parts touch or are connected to each other. Consider the installation of a steel beam, a roof edge or a connection to an existing facade.

A working drawing can further elaborate production and assembly. Check who prepares these drawings and who coordinates them with the structural and architectural design.

What is recorded?

  • Connections and fixings
  • Dimensions and material transitions
  • Finish and protection
  • Coordination with suppliers

Make the assignment concrete

Ask what documents you are receiving, what purpose they are for and what level of detail is provided. Agree on how additions and design changes will be processed and who will coordinate with other parties.

Work with the correct revision

Check that calculations and drawings refer to the same situation. Have important changes assessed first and provide all parties involved with the current documents.

What level of detail does the contractor need?

A connection drawing should identify the components, dimensions and specified fixings. A schematic detail explains the concept; it is not automatically a complete fabrication drawing. Ask what the drawing may be used for and which supplier details still need to be added.
