What does a structural engineer do?

Discover how the structural engineer examines, designs and substantiates the supporting structure of your building plan.

Designer behind a computer with construction drawings

The supporting structure as a whole

The structural engineer examines how loads are dissipated through the building. It concerns individual parts and the coherence between foundation, floors, walls, beams and roof.

From design to substantiation

The architectural design and data from existing buildings form a starting point. The structural engineer assesses the construction and prepares the necessary calculations and drawings within the agreed assignment.

Collaborate with the other parties

Design choices and implementation questions require coordination. Determine who will provide additional research, supplier development, temporary support and control of changes.

What does the calculation establish?

A calculation demonstrates whether the proposed structural design meets the stated requirements and assumptions. The report should identify the elements assessed, the loads assumed and the existing information used. When requesting a quotation, ask about the drawings and details that enable the contractor to identify the design, as well as the report itself.
