What is it used for?
Construction timber is available in various products and strength classes. Solid wood, laminated wood and LVL have different properties and applications.
What needs to be coordinated?
In addition to beam dimensions, connections, moisture conditions and the structure of the floor or roof are important. A timber size from another project cannot be adopted without assessment.
- Product and strength class
- Moisture and ventilation
- Connectors
- Stability and diaphragm action
- Coordination with insulation and finishing
From material selection to material list
A complete list lists the parts, specifications, quantities and associated drawing revision. Let this information match the established design and elaboration of the supplier.
Check whether material, dimensions, quantities and connections in the supplier's quotation correspond to the design documents.
Who provides what information?
- The designer determines the building assembly.
- The structural engineer specifies the required structural performance and materials within the agreed scope of work.
- The supplier develops the agreed products and production data.
- The contractor coordinates delivery, installation and inspection.
What should a structural timber order specify?
Include the specified strength class and product type alongside length and cross-section. Solid timber, glued laminated timber and other engineered products are not interchangeable without assessment. Agree holes, notches and connections before manufacture: an on-site alteration may affect the section used in the calculation.
