What is it used for?
Steel is used as a beam, column or portal. Profile types such as IPE, HEA and HEB differ in shape and properties; the type alone does not say whether a profile is suitable for a project.
What needs to be coordinated?
The structural engineer determines the profile, steel quality, supports and connections. The supplier then uses the final drawings for development and production.
- Available construction height
- Supports and columns
- Corrosion protection
- Fire resistant finish
- Transport and assembly
From material selection to material list
A complete list lists the parts, specifications, quantities and associated drawing revision. Let this information match the established design and elaboration of the supplier.
Check whether material, dimensions, quantities and connections in the supplier's quotation correspond to the design documents.
Who provides what information?
- The designer determines the building assembly.
- The structural engineer determines the required constructive performance and specifications within the order.
- The supplier develops the agreed products and production data.
- The contractor coordinates delivery, installation and inspection.
Why does a steel beam have no single load capacity?
A section name such as IPE or HEB does not tell you how much weight your beam can carry. Span, steel grade, load distribution, lateral restraint and connections all form part of the assessment. Deflection may also govern the design. Compare beams within the same design and order using the specified section and drawing revision.
