A choice of profile and suitable support go together.

Forces come together at the point of support
The load on one beam is discharged to the supports. This can cause local high forces to arise at the support point. The receiving wall, column or foundation is tailored accordingly.
One detail is project specific
The required solution depends on the material, geometry and load. Do not copy support length or plate detail from another project. Work with the current details associated with your calculation.
The force must be able to extend beyond the end of the beam
A steel beam transfers its load to the supports. Subsequently, underlying walls, columns or other components must be able to further dissipate those forces. The condition and geometry of existing buildings are therefore relevant. A profile choice does not necessarily mean that an existing wall is a suitable support. Ask which components below the beam supports are included in the assessment and what additional information is needed.
Match details to the actual situation
A detail must provide sufficient information about the contact surface, connections and required materials. The executor can only prepare properly when the existing dimensions and deviations are known. Communicate proposed changes before components are created or modified. An alternative record, anchor or installation method can change the load path and should therefore be referred back to the responsible designer.
Your preparation in four steps
- Existing support material
- Dimensions and condition
- Calculation of the beam
- Connecting details
Frequently asked questions on this topic
Can I choose a steel beam based on the span alone?
No. Loads, support, lateral support, deformation and connections are also relevant. Two openings of the same width may therefore require different solutions. Do not use a general beam table as an ordering specification for an unknown existing structure.
Is another steel profile with the same height interchangeable?
Not automatically. Profile shape, dimensions, steel type and connections influence the behavior. Have a proposed alternative assessed before ordering. Also ask whether connection details, plates and required protection need to be adjusted.
