Static calculation and strength calculation

Various terms describe parts of the constructive substantiation.

The short answer

Determine the load transfer

A static analysis describes how loads, supports and connections together lead to forces and deformations. The chosen schematization must match the actual constructive behavior.

Evaluate the components

A strength assessment examines whether components can absorb the relevant forces. Also distortion and stability can be decisive. Ask which whole is assessed with the calculation offered.

From model to assessment

A calculation model is a simplified representation of the structure. Its supports, connections and loads must adequately represent the actual situation. The structural engineer uses the results to assess the relevant members. The model is not proof on its own: input data, assumptions and interpretation are part of the assessment. Ask which information about the existing building has been used and which parts fall outside the agreed scope.

Strength, deformation and stability are related

A part can have sufficient resistance to failure and yet deform too much for the intended application. The stability of parts and the complete building can also be decisive. Therefore, one single stress value or beam size is not a complete answer. The assessment must be based on use, material, connections and the way in which forces are dissipated through the building.

Your preparation in four steps

  1. Description of the system to be assessed
  2. loads and usage
  3. Material and geometry data
  4. Agreed reporting and drawing work

Frequently asked questions on this topic

What does a structural calculation for a new home include?

A related assignment can concern the foundation, floors, walls, columns, beams and roof. The precise parts and drawings must be agreed. Also ask which supplier calculations are required and who monitors mutual coordination.

When do I involve the structural engineer in new construction?

Preferably during the development of the main concept. Large openings, free spans and installation space can affect the supporting structure. Early coordination makes it clear which choices require further research or elaboration before the design becomes final.
