Standards for structural calculations: what do you need to know as a client?

Understand why the assessment framework, the existing situation and the correct design version belong in the report.

The short answer

Understand why the assessment framework, the existing situation and the correct design version belong in the report.

A standard belongs to a specific assessment question

A constructive assessment uses an appropriate framework for the building and activity. New construction, existing construction and renovation may require different principles. It is up to the structural engineer to determine the relevant standards, versions and any national annexes. As a client, ask whether the report clearly describes which situation, components and principles of use have been assessed.

What are Eurocodes and National Annexes?

Eurocodes are a European set of standards for structural design. National Annexes contain national choices for those standards. The series covers loads and different materials, among other things. For existing construction and renovations, NEN also refers to the NEN 8700 series. Use the NEN explanation for current coherence and let the structural engineer determine the application for your own project.

Above all, check whether the report suits your assignment

A list of standards does not in itself prove that every question in your construction plan has been answered. Compare the described assignment with the components examined. Check whether the correct drawings and changes have been used and what information has been taken as a starting point. Ask for an explanation of unclear exclusions. This will give you a better understanding of what the calculation is intended for and what additional elaboration may be necessary.

Your preparation in four steps

  1. Described assessment framework
  2. Current draft version
  3. Usage and material principles
  4. Clear definition of the assignment

Frequently asked questions on this topic

Is one assignment useful for multiple constructive interventions?

A coherent assignment helps to assess shared carrying routes and connections. Make an overview of all interventions and record which parts are being developed. The exact division of tasks remains important when different suppliers provide their own calculations.

How do I keep track of changes from different parties?

Work with one document list and appoint a contact person for coordination. Record which drawings, parts and suppliers are affected for each change. Share decisions in a timely manner with everyone who produces or implements based on that data.
