Structural calculations

Structural calculation stairwell

A new staircase requires a carefully designed opening in the floor.

What is assessed?

A stairwell can interrupt beams or a concrete floor. The forces carried by these parts must be conducted along the opening through a suitable structure.

The solution depends on the floor type and the location of the opening. Adjust the construction to the staircase supplier, free height and connecting walls.

What data is needed?

The following information can be used to prepare the assessment. The structural engineer determines whether additional research is necessary.

  • Floor structure and bearing direction
  • Position and dimensions of the opening
  • Stair specification
  • Photos and existing drawings

What do you receive?

Record the exact delivery in the quotation. Depending on your project and assignment, this involves:

  • Calculation of the floor change
  • Ravel or shelter construction
  • Connection details within the order
The connection makes the difference.

Discuss who will take care of the architectural development, supplier details and any temporary support. In this way, the components involved are coordinated.

Materials and drawings

The choice of materials and connections follow from the design. Read more about Structural timber and the difference between a architectural drawing and a construction drawing.

How does the process proceed?

You describe your project and share the available data. The assignment, any additional information and planning are then coordinated. Check it out complete step-by-step plan for all phases.

What does your assignment cover?

Fix the stair opening position before ordering the staircase. The opening may interrupt joists or reinforcement; trimming may need space beside or below the floor. Ensure the stair supplier and engineer use the same dimensions.

Can I already order material?

Order structural parts based on the coordinated and current design data. A preliminary estimate is not a complete basis for this.

Is a site visit necessary?

That depends on the project and the available information. Sometimes drawings and photos are sufficient for the inventory; sometimes an admission or additional examination is necessary.

What happens if my plan changes?

Report changes before they are implemented. The structural engineer assesses whether calculations and drawings need to be adjusted.

  1. Describe your complete construction plan.

A new staircase requires a carefully designed opening in the floor.

  2. Discuss missing data.

The structural engineer determines which recording or additional information is required for the agreed assessment.

  3. Record order and delivery.

Agree on the calculated parts, drawings, price and planning.

  4. Match the effect to the implementation.

Use the current documents and have relevant changes reviewed before they are implemented.

Frequently asked questions about stairwells

Is a stairwell the same on every floor?

No. A wooden beam layer, solid concrete floor and prefab floor system have different properties and carrying routes. The location of the opening is also relevant. Therefore, collect the floor structure and available system data before developing the solution.

Who determines the size of the stair opening?

The size must match the stairs, free height, floor thickness and structural support. Have the designer, staircase supplier and structural engineer use the same data. Only order the stairs based on the agreed and checked dimensions.
