Structural engineer in Amsterdam

An Amsterdam project may require records from several periods. Search separately for the original building and later alterations, identify your storey and specify the elements you want to change.

What you can send us

  • The address of your project.
  • A short description of your plans.
  • Any drawings and photos you already have.

Prepare your local project

Amsterdam: search by period, enquire for your storey

  1. Choose the archive route

Amsterdam separates records before 1905, from 1905–2010 and after 2010. The first two routes are online; later records have district-specific contact routes.

Practical step: Record the address, district and known alteration dates. Request the original building records and the later alteration to which your project connects.

    Official source · Gemeente Amsterdam
  2. Discuss heritage early

For a listed building or one in a protected townscape, Amsterdam recommends consulting a heritage adviser during the planning stage.

Practical step: Prepare existing drawings, photos and your sketch for that discussion. Mark the exact changes; a neighbourhood name alone does not establish the status of your address.

    Official source · Monumentenadviseur Amsterdam
  3. Identify flat and building

For an apartment enquiry, distinguish information about your own flat from records covering the whole building.

Practical step: State the storey and ask the manager or owners’ association which existing drawings are available. Include available records of the building elements above and below the proposed work.

Municipal information checked on 31 October 2026. The practical steps are our preparation suggestions. Archive records and maps do not automatically describe the current condition of your building.

The local housing profile

In Amsterdam, 88% of housing is in multi-family buildings. An opening within your own home can raise questions about elements beyond it: what bears on the wall above, and where do the loads go below? Gather sections and drawings of adjacent storeys where available. The 486,769 homes in this municipal profile cover both Amsterdam and Weesp; these are not neighbourhood figures.

Within Noord-Holland, 31.2% of residents live in the municipality of Amsterdam. The settlement classification dated 1 January 2026 lists 2 settlements here. These are Amsterdam, Weesp. The population and housing figures on this page cover the entire municipality, including these settlements.

Prepare a wall opening in your Amsterdam apartment

Identify the wall and proposed opening on a floor plan. Describe changes to floors, services or stairs that form part of the same project. Calculating one element does not replace coordination of the overall work.

  • Address, unit number and storey on each set of documents.
  • Overview photos that clearly correspond to the marked floor plan.
  • Known earlier openings and building drawings that are still missing.

Amsterdam compared with the province of Noord-Holland

With 934,526 residents, Amsterdam ranks 1 among the 44 municipalities in Noord-Holland, from largest to smallest population. The municipality accounts for 34.3% of the province’s housing stock and 7.1% of its land area. This shows the relationship between the number of homes and the area within this municipality.

Calculated population density in Amsterdam is 4,968 residents per km² of land, compared with 1,124 for the province of Noord-Holland. This is an area comparison, not a measure of access to your building site. Describe access, available working space and adjoining buildings in your enquiry.

Soil and ground types

Within the boundaries of Amsterdam, map unit Vs covers the largest measured area of soil polygons in this analysis: 854 hectares, or 11.6% of the mapped area.

Original Dutch source name:

The shares are calculated within the soil polygons on the map, not across all land or all building addresses. For compound map codes, the name of the first unit is shown. The map describes shallow soil; built-up areas are not fully mapped. It does not establish bearing capacity or determine whether piles, pad footings or strip foundations should be used.

How much renovation takes place?

The CBS tables used here do not provide a complete local renovation count for Amsterdam. We therefore do not estimate this from population, new homes or a national percentage. These sources also do not establish which type of renovation is most common.
