Purmerend and Beemster: follow municipality, address and building

  1. Identify the former municipality

Purmerend permits through 1999 and Beemster permits through 2010 are held by Waterlands Archief. Request later files digitally from the municipality.

Practical step: Include the former municipality and separate alteration dates. A Purmerend file from 2005 follows a different request route from a Beemster file of the same year.

  2. Check the historical address too

Waterlands Archief records files under the original address. Renumbering, renamed streets and files covering whole housing blocks can complicate an exact address search.

Practical step: Record any known former address. If needed, search the street without a house number and inspect number ranges; no search result does not prove that no file exists.

  3. Use heritage maps as context

The municipal heritage map includes monuments, historical roads, waterways, stolp farmhouses and lost heritage. An entry therefore does not automatically mean listed-monument status.

Practical step: Keep the relevant map layer name and site description. If uncertain, ask which status and conditions apply to the exact proposed change, particularly for a farmhouse or alterations around its yard.

The local housing profile

For Purmerend, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) records 95,912 residents and 43,479 homes on 1 January 2025. Single-family homes make up 66% of the stock; dwellings in multi-unit buildings account for 34%. This distinction helps when preparing an alteration: work on an entire house raises different questions from work within a shared building. Describe which walls, floors or roofs you wish to alter.

Within Noord-Holland, 3.2% of residents live in the municipality of Purmerend. The settlement classification dated 1 January 2026 lists 5 settlements here. These include Middenbeemster, Noordbeemster, Purmerend, Westbeemster. The population and housing figures on this page cover the entire municipality, including these settlements.

Changing how a floor is used or planning an extension on the site? Identify the building and element concerned on your own site sketch. Keep existing and proposed uses separate. The municipal website states restrictions on sharing archive drawings. First ask whether you may share them with your adviser.

  • Current and any former address, plus your own sketch of buildings on the site.
  • Proposed change per floor, building or connection, with relevant photos of your own.
  • File numbers, missing records and any relevant heritage description; check rights before sharing documents.

The shares are calculated within the soil polygons on the map, not across all land or all building addresses. For compound map codes, the name of the first unit is shown. The map describes shallow soil; built-up areas are not fully mapped. It does not establish bearing capacity or determine whether piles, pad footings or strip foundations should be used.
